When you think of a hippie, what are the first assumptions that come to mind? Peace, love, freedom, weed, Woodstock, bandannas, tie-dye, right? But what would a wise hippie have to say? Maybe just «Drugs, sex and Rock ‘n’ Roll»?
This is what many of us thought the Hippie Movement was all about. We saw posters of colorful young people, with oval glasses covering their eyes, joints in their hands, flowers on their head and we knew of Woodstock and John Lennon. And then, some of us, we realized we knew nothing about the Movement behind the stereotype. There should be, there must be an ideology behind all that fuss!
As it seems, the Hippie Movement is a youth movement which originated in the United States during the 1960’s. It was influenced by Eastern religions (especially Buddism) and various form of Spirituality. Its fundamental beliefs revolved around the way humanity interacts with its natural habitat and the way human beings treat each other. They revered harmony with Nature, communal living, artistic experimentation and recreational drugs.
They believed true peace may only be achieved by returning to the way we were meant to live. By embracing our true nature as the most intelligent mammals on this planet and creating a peaceful and beneficial co-existence with the planet we call home.
Quite interesting, isn’t it?
Our beloved Hippies are the most easily recognizable and frequently emulated characters in American culture and, 40 years later, people are still using hippie sayings as a means to express their feelings and states of being.
Below there is a collection of the greatest phrases ever constructed by Hippies that I wanted to share with you. Here we go:
«To get the hippie out of certain characters is probably the most difficult thing for me. I was not a hippie by choice but by birth!»
«If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the ’60s, that’s his problem. Love and peace are eternal!»
«Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, Live the life you’ve always imagined!»
«When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace!»
«My business is to enjoy and have fun. And why not, if in the end everything will end, right?»
«And those who were seen dancing were through to be insane by those who could not hear the music!»
«Revolution is not something fixed in ideology, nor is it something fashioned to a particular decade. It is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit!»
«Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls!»
