Becoming a hippie can be a refreshing and rewarding experience. However, now that times have changed, the ideas and looks of hippies have also changed dramatically. Many pair drug use with modern hippies, and for many in the culture, this is true. Pursue the hippie lifestyle if you feel a natural inclination towards the ideology and aesthetic, but not for the drug culture surrounding it.
The world that we live in can be a difficult and ugly place. It can be hard to be at peace with yourself when you’re worried about things like your job, bills, etc. However, there are things that you can do to still be a hippy in a modern world.
So, let’s find out how to be a Hippie in a Modern World:
1. Eat organic foods!
Avoid genetically modified foods at all costs. Hippie’s find that it is better for the earth and healthier for the body and for the soul. Hippies nowadays and in the past ate to sustain themselves and the planet. A reason hippies eat this way is because they treat their bodies like a Temple. This is why you should pick out the purest ingredients available.
Most hippies are also vegetarian or vegan. Vegetarianism isn’t for everyone, but a lot of hippies are vegetarian. They go vegetarian because of their love for animals and their stance against violence. They respect Nature and they care about animal rights. Industrial cattle farming is one of the highest producers of toxic emissions. It is better for your body and the environment to eat a plant based diet.
2. Dressing Like a Hippie
Let your hair down. Hippies traditionally and to this day have long hair. It isn’t required, but for both girls and guys, natural, long hair is viewed as hippie. Don’t use a flat iron or a curling iron, but instead let the hair do its natural thing. This is exactly what hippies want: a natural appearance.
Hippies usually wear long, flowing shirts, long skirts, tie dye, bell bottom pants and clothing items with floral prints. They don’t wear makeup but, if they do, they have a natural look. They also use natural products that don’t contain harmful chemicals.
Modern hippies enjoy crystals and jewelry that incorporates crystal healing. Other popular forms of jewelry are various stones and natural rocks that are artfully wrapped in copper wire. Fanny packs are also a popular bags for modern hippies to carry around.
3. Create Art
Playing a musical instrument has a way of bringing you a sense of peace and every time you play an instrument you’re creating art, even if you’re just jamming’ or practicing some scales. Writing beautiful music allows you to express yourself and add more beauty into a world that can be cold and ugly. We can all agree that the world needs more beauty.
If playing music isn’t your thing, then you could always do something else like dancing, painting, drawing, etc. So long as you’re doing something that you enjoy doing. They are completely immersed in the music and the dance. Most importantly, they look at peace with themselves and this is exactly what I want to be. It doesn’t matter how you choose to create your art and make your mark on the world, as long as it gives you happiness.
4. Thinking Like a Hippie
Find your opinion and voice it! Hippies are all about being themselves. If you don’t agree with something, voice your opinion! Don’t just agree with things to seem “cool” or “like everyone else.” Hippies aren’t like that. Find your opinion and voice it. Are you again the prison industry underpaying inmates for mass goods? Let your voice be heard. Against the war? Share your opinions! Hippies in the 60s to 70s protested the Vietnam war. Engage with contemporary struggles against social justice. Don’t feel limited to “hippie” issues. There are plenty of communities that need to be fought for.
Be calm, cool, and collected! Hippies are usually laid back and aren’t stressful. If you have something that is stressing you out, take deep breaths and sit back for a few minutes. If you have tendencies of being stressed out, begin practicing transcendental meditation.Transcendental meditation was popular in the 1960s and currently it is becoming a well-respected practice that holds many health benefits.
Get in touch with Nature! Get some fresh air and feel the sun on your skin. Old school hippies believed that nature itself contains the answers to life’s most important questions. The old mentality was to show respect to mother nature and be in contact with our natural animal essence that is repressed through culture. Take time off to go on hikes.
Recycle as much as possible. Never throw trash onto the ground. As a modern hippie, or a granola, your mentality is to save the planet, not to pollute it. Plant flowers and trees instead of cutting them down. Reduce on your water and paper consumption.
Be open minded! Accept other people’s beliefs and accept that not everyone is going to have the same view on an issue that you do. If someone is bothering you with their opinion, try to see the argument from their point of view. There are two sides to every opinion and you should try to listen to everyone without becoming angry.
5. Disconnect from Social Media
We all have our own reasons for being on social media. Social media has a way of bringing a lot of negativity into your life, however. Science has suggested that people are more depressed, the more time they spend on Facebook, Instagram, etc. We see pictures of our friend’s awesome vacation or posts about their major milestones and then we tend to harshly judge ourselves based on the accomplishments of our peers. It’s all incredibly fake because people show only their best selves on social media. We hardly see the normal day to day struggles that people experience and as a result it seems like everyone is living a better life than we are.
You would be happier if you disconnected from social media. Post updates about your life for your family and close friends, but try to avoid sitting and scrolling through your feed for hours at a time. You have your own life to live and comparing yourself to others keeps you from living it.
6. Get Involved in a Cause
There are so many things that you could choose to fight for. Try to save the planet, take care of the animals or volunteer at your neighborhood co-op. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you stand up for a cause that you feel passionate about. You might think that doing something small like signing a petition, or volunteering to clean up a highway doesn’t make a difference, but it does! You’ll be doing your part to make the world a more beautiful place, and you’ll feel better about yourself as well.
7. Meditate Daily
We’re all busy people with our jobs, school, families, etc. As a result we’re also a lot more stressed out. We stress about how we’re going to pay bills, whether we’re doing enough to keep our partners happy or whether taking care of our kids. In order to deal with this stress you should consider daily meditation. Take some time out from your busy life and shut off your brain.
Meditation allows you to gain perspective on the things that are stressing you out. f you’re having trouble turning off your brain, try sitting in a semi-dark room. Turn off your phone or TV. Put on some soothing music and try a mantra. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it allows you to quiet your mind. Meditation is good for your health and good for your soul.
