Omar Rayyan, who born in 1968, is a famous, published illustrator of children’s books and young adult books. He bases his works on Fantasy, Folklore & Fairy Tales. He graduated with a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has been illustrating professionally for over 15 years and his clients include Simon & Schuster, Holiday House, Cricket Magazine Group and Hyperion/Disney.
So, having created illustrations for many publishers, Omar’s primary market is geared towards children’s and young adult’s magazine and books, doing cover and interior illustrations. Other genres he has worked in include the gaming market, most notably for «Magic: The Gathering», where he has done card art and concept work. Omar was also among the talented artists who contributed concept art and created the look for the motion picture «The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe».
Upon graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Omar Rayyan settled on the island of Martha’s Vineyard with his wife Sheila and their menagerie: a cat, a budgie, an assortment of fish and a horse named Spot. The bucolic surroundings compliment and help inspire his “old world” aesthetic toward painting. Although looking to the past for inspiration and guidance from the great oil painters of the Northern Renaissance and the Romantic and Symbolist Painters of the 19th Century, he has picked watercolor as his medium of choice.
He works primarily in watercolor, with a special affinity for animals. His artistic influences are wide-ranging and ever-changing, from Arthur Rackham to John Singer Sargent and Persian miniatures. Paintings of whim and fantasy made to indulge his own personal tastes and humors and to hopefully entertain and please the viewing public. In addition to his commercial work, Omar’s most favorite body of work is not created for publishers, but just for show.
Some of the published credits of Omar Rayyan include «Mistmantle Chronicles Book Three», «Heir of Mistmantle (Mistmantle Chronicles), «Waggit’s Tale» and in 2005, as I said before, he was a concept illustrator for «The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe».
He is also the illustrator of the cover art for the 2009 Collection, Magic Mirrors, which was nominated for the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists’ Chesley Award 2010 (Hardback Book Cover Category).
